Alternative sources of anticoagulants have arisen as a result of the increasing demand for safer anticoagulant clinical therapy, and the sulfated polysaccharides of seaweeds have gained attention in biomedicine. In this study, crude sulfated polysaccharide fractions (denominated Hf1, Hf2 and Hf3) were obtained from the red marine alga Halymenia floresia and the anticoagulant properties of a soluble crude polysaccharide fraction (Hf2s) were assayed. The three differential extractions yielded 38.6%. The polysaccharides are composed mainly of galactose, with small amounts of xylose and glucose. Characterization, chemical modifications and in vitro anticoagulant properties of an exopolysaccharide produced by Alteromonas infernus ArchiMer

A new low-molecular-weight 'heparin-like' component was obtained from an exopolysaccharide produced by a mesophilic strain found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Data concerning the structure of the native high-molecular-weight exopolysaccharide (10(6) g/mol, 10% sulfate content) are reported for the first time. Two depolymerization processes were used to obtain low-molecular-weight (24-35 x 10(3) g/mol) oversulfated fractions (sulfate content 20 or 40%), Nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicated that after sulfation (40%), the low-molecular-weight fraction obtained by free radical depolymerization was less sulfated in the 6-O-position than the fraction depolymerized by acid hydrolysis. Bacterial polysaccharides offer fascinating potential applications for the pharmaceutical industry. Although many known marine bacteria produce exopolysaccharides (EPS), continuation in looking for new polysaccharide-producing micro-organisms is promising. Marine bacteria, isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vents, have demonstrated their ability to produce in aerobic conditions, unusual EPS. With the aim of discovering biological activities, EPS presenting different structural features were studied. Partial characterization and anticoagulant activity of a heterofucan from the brown seaweed Padina gymnospora BJMBR

The brown algae Padina gymnospora contain different fucans. Powdered algae were submitted to proteolysis with the proteolytic enzyme maxataze. The first extract of the algae was constituted of polysaccharides contaminated with lipids, phenols, etc. Fractionation of the fucans with increasing concentrations of acetone produced fractions with different proportions of fucose, xylose, uronic acid, galactose, and sulfate. Polysaccharide labelling: impact on structural and biological properties ArchiMer

Three sulphated polysaccharides labelled at the reducing end with three different chemical treatments (2-aminopyridine (2-AP), 8-amino-1,3,6-trisulphonic acid (ANTS) and 6-(biotinyl)-aminocaproyl-hydrazide (BACH)) were compared. Molecular weight, chemical composition, nuclear magnetic resonance features and anticoagulant activity expressed as activated partial thromboplastin time were studied to determine whether structural and biological properties were retained or not after labelling. Partial depolymerisation and reduced biological activity were observed when reductive amination was performed with 2-AP. Potential Use of Polysaccharides from the Brown Alga Undaria pinnatifida as Anticoagulants BABT

Undaria pinnatifida (U. pinnatifida) is a highly invasive species and has caused concern all over the world because it has invaded coastal environments, has the potential to displace native species, significantly alters habitat for associated fauna, and disturbs navigation. Any attempt to eradicate it would be futile, owing to the elusive, microscopic gametophyte, and because the alga thrives in sites rich in anthropic activities. Venice Lagoon is the largest Mediterranean transitional environment and the spot of the highest introduction of non-indigenous species, including U. pinnatifida, which is removed as a waste.
